    Pepper Braveheart

I had been volunteering at Adopt-a-Cat in Anchorage, Alaska. I would pick up several loads of laundry, wash them several times because there was an outbreak of ringworm -- and then lug them all back to the shelter.

One day, I asked my husband (Bob) to help me take the laundry back. I was folding and stacking when Bob said, "Look at this." I turned around and there was a tiny kitty curled up in his arms, tucked up under his chin. Sound asleep. Purring her brains out. I smiled and he said, she had leapt from one of the shelves and gone to sleep. He cuddled her for a long time (while I folded and stacked the laundry, of course).

The next time I needed to take laundry to the shelter, Bob VOLUNTEERED to help me. Pepper came running towards him as soon as we got there. Another volunteer explained that Pepper has the worst heart murmur they've ever heard. It's a 6 on a scale of 1-6. No medication will help. And until kitty heart transplants are available, there are no treatment options.

While I'm away on business, I call the shelter to find out how Pepper is doing and offer to foster her. I casually drop that into the conversation with Bob that night. Long story, short .... By the time I returned home from business, Pepper was adopted and living at our house.

Pepper is happy and healthy. Her heart has never given her a problem. Our vet said, just take her home and love her. She may not have a long life, but she will have a good life with us. I can't begin to tell you how much joy she has brought into our lives.

    Healed a broken heart

    Healed a broken heart

After losing a beloved cat to kidney failure, I swore never again. I walked into Petsmart and in the back they have cats from the humane society there for adoption. There was this beautiful, big black kitty named Jonny. As I walked up to the glass he stretched out his claws, rubbed against the glass and turned over onto his back. I immediately teared up because that was a famous trait our big kitty Tibby used to do. I had to leave, but could not get him off my mind or out of my heart. I went back 5 or 6 times throughout the next 2 weeks, hoping he had gotten a home. But sure enough, there he was. I even prayed about it and asked that he get a home. Well, he got a home, with me. It is like God put him there to help heal my broken heart from losing our kitty.

    Cheddar the Lion

    Cheddar the Lion

I adopted Cheddar from a local shelter about 3 years ago. He was the largest orange Main Coon I had ever seen; weighing in at 20 pounds. When I walked into the foster home he promptly rolled over and offered his belly like a dog.

Now he is a svelt 17 pound lion and we go for daily walks outside. He sticks to my side unless craving grass or the occasional gallop, but always comes when called. I think he was a dog in a former life!

Lilley & Maggey - My Buddies

Lilley & Maggey - My Buddies

Pictured is Lilley, the older of our two cat rescues. Despite the fact that she and Maggey don't always see eye to eye, they enjoy napping together on the porch or on our bed and keeping an eye on the neighborhood.

Although Lilley, our gray and calico senior cat, can sometimes be aloof, she never left my side during my cancer treatment and even though our daughter selected her from the many cats available for adoption that day, she has always been "my cat." She has a very loving and gentle nature and fur that feels like cashmere. She's approaching 10 years old now and has a slight heart murmur, but we hope she'll be with us for many more years.

Maggey, our charcoal gray green eyed beauty, rescued from the Central Florida SPCA, is the "baby" of the family. She "cries" for attention, loves to sit by us and loves to sleep in the bed with us. She always has to be "touching" you and her tail never seems to sleep.

Both girls were in rough shape when we adopted them. Lilley was very skiddish and fearful and Maggey had a fur coat that was coarse and rough. It took alot of TLC and good care and nutrition to get them healthy and happy. Maggey's coat is now shiny and silky and although she is still afraid of loud noises and "hides" under the covers, she and her big sister are now living the lives they deserve.

If it was within our means we would adopt a hundred, but I think Lilley might disagree. We've had dogs in the past but are definitely "cat people." Lilley is the queen and Maggey is the princess and we wouldn't have it any other way!

    Lexi & Lynx

    Lexi & Lynx

My fiance and I adopted Lexi & Lynx in Nov. 2007. They are brother & sister and were rescued from the streets when they were only a couple weeks old. Although we had many choices for adoption, we knew we wanted to keep these two from being separated...so we took them home with us! Although they were very skittish at first, they know they have found their forever home and their true personalities now shine. Lexi is a little rebel and loves doing things on her own, while Lynx is a big-time cuddler and constantly wants attention. We can't imagine life without them and are happy to provide them with a safe, loving, happy home.

    Christopher Robin

    Christopher Robin

Christopher Robin was found on a Monday afternoon in a tire storage container at a local business. He had spent the entire weekend in the container in 98 degree heat without food or water. Luckily for me, my boyfriend found him and brought him home. After dinner and a bath, he instantly moved into my heart and has been there for the past two years. Shortly after his arrival, I adopted two kittens. He immediately became their caregiver. He would even allow them to "nurse" on his fur. His second duty as caregiver has been to my boyfriend's children. He watches over them as they play and is their constant companion. He is the sweetest and funniest cat. Not a day goes by that he doesn't make me laugh. Soon he will be in training as a therapy cat. He is one of four and I am so lucky to have them!

My friend and I were driving to lunch one day on a busy street in Ybor City, Florida. The cars ahead of us were putting on their breaks and swerving to miss something in the road. When we pulled up, we saw it was a very tiny black kitten huddled in the middle of the road. I jumped out and picked her up. Her little tail was bald, but otherwise, she seemed unharmed. She was 4 weeks old. I took her home and she slept for 24 hours straight. After that, as wobbly as she still was, she started terrorizing my other cat, Bob, and hasn't stopped since. Now she is 2 years old this month and eats my flip flops and toilet paper and destroys every lampshade in the house. But I love her and would never regret bringing her home!

    LONG LIVE LASSIE!!

we live in bali (indonesia) half the year. it's a wonderful country, but being 3rd world, the most heartbraking sites are strays. Lassie lives in the street...but prefers it. Yeah...not an original name....but some children named her. anyway, whenever she sees us she comes running and we feed here sometimes twice a day. her probblem was that she was constantly getting pregnant and covered with mange. took 5 people but the mobile vet unit came...took her away and friends paid to have her sterilized and cured of the mange. now she is happy and healthy...till roaming the streets...as she loves her freedom. she is cooling off on the mini hindu temple.

    Indie the Storm-Drain Kitten

    Indie the Storm-Drain Kitten

Driving home one evening, I spotted a tiny kitten in the street licking a used ketchup packet before it scurried back into the brush. I returned with my wife and daughter to pursue the kitten. We chased the kitten and lost site of it but could hear it crying after an hour or two. To our horror, we concluded that it had run down in to a storm drain. We pried open the grate and my daughter climbed down into the dark, bug infested hole. She could hear the kitten crying but could only see two eyes glowing about 80 yards into the pitch black tunnel. With the help of the real-life heroes of the Temple Terrace Fire Dept., we finally were able to extract the kitten. He was frail, visibly shaken and starving. Two weeks later and Indie (short for Indiana Jones) has been adopted and is living the good life in a happy home in Tampa. He is playful and super-affectionate. We still keep in contact with his new owners and it feels great to know that there are others willing to help animals in need and to provide them loving homes. Thanks TTFD, Lisa, and family!

    My Lucky boy

    My Lucky boy

It was Sunday, Father's day of 2006 and I most certainly did not want to go out that day. I was practically forced and headed into the city but was disappointed that the train station where I lived was closed and I would be forced to walk over 8 blocks to the next train station. It appeared there was another round of train track-work being done. So I reluctantly headed out. I barely made it across the corner of where I live and I see a skinny, dirty white and tan cat following people around. This was no alley cat. He was eager for attention and seemed very hungry. I approached him and he quickly rose up on his hind legs so that I could pet his head, which I did. He had no collar and it looked like he had been in the streets for some time.

I could not believe no one had fed or given the poor thing any water. I grabbed the scraggily thing by his scruff and brought him home where I knew he would NOT be welcomed. As soon as I could, I brought the cat in to the local ASPCA to surrender him. However they had no room for him.

I brought the cat I named Lucky, back home, and tried my best to have someone take him. But I was quickly becoming attached to him despite the fact that he was very, very naughty. He broke so many things I didn't know what to do. But he was sweet, very sweet, smart and frisky. I soon came to realize his rambunctious was a sign of high anxiety. With lots of patience, love and of course training, he soon became my ideal animal companion, best friend, and inspiration.

    Lynx and The Bunny

    Lynx and The Bunny

Five years ago I went to the SPCA for a new cat. I sat in a chair in the center of one of two rooms and waited as 60 cats wandered in and out. I eventually was met by a beautiful Maine Coon who climbed into my lap and loved me up one side and down the other. And so the love affair began, I named him Lynx. What an amazing loving/compassionate cat... a greeter to all guests, a guardian of the yard.... and then last year he became my hero when he brought home a very young starving male to eat from his bowl. 'The Bunny' (as I named him) was traumatized beyond belief with a cataract in one eye due to a wound. It took close to a month for me to even get close to him... wildy clawing the air, no purrs, so scared. Could I or would I keep him? With Tellington Touch, Cranial Sacral, Reiki and with much Love and Patience he has turned into a beautiful loving cat .... bringing more joy and laughter into our home sweet home.

    Miss Pookie

    Miss Pookie

I found Miss Pookie meowing loudly under my bird feeder on May 1st. I took her to our veterinarian shortly afterwards and he estimated her to be 7 or 8 months old. She weighed approximately 2 pounds. I had her spayed as soon as she gained a bit of weight, and was strong enough. She is a very loving, and vocal pet. Miss Pookie loves to say good morning to everyone, and always thanks me for feeding her!

Nubbie Tail ; A Blessing Beyond Measure!

Nubbie Tail ; A Blessing Beyond Measure!

I was working at a local convenience store/ gas station. I worked the 4 a.m. to 3 p.m. shift. During breaks and my lunch I would often sit outside. I had seen 4 or 5 little kittens by the dumpster many times but, they were wild and very fast.

Over the course of summer me and the other girls at work made a point of getting customers to help us catch and adopt the kittens and the momma. I thought they had all been captured but to my surprise a small orange and white kitten had been left behind.

I grew up with cats and my daughter always had a cat. I was never really close to any of them and thought of my self as more of a dog person.

I kept feeding and eventually spending time with the little cat I named Nubbie Tail. I guess six months had pasted and I began to wonder and worry about him so much so that, would often go to work early and go by in the evening.

I prayed every night that the Lord would send angels to watch over him and I asked that he help Nubbie to trust me. I got a call late one night from a trucker that said he had trapped him in the back of his rig.

I will never forget the day I brought Nubbie Tail home!

I could never put into words the love I have for this cat! By the grace of God I have been blessed! Nubbie has touched my families heart and filled our souls!

    Cush

    Cush

My fiance and I had recently moved in together and I was dying to get a pet. Mark had never had a cat before and was pretty sure he was not a "cat person" but agreed to meet the big beautiful boy I spotted on PetFinder.com. Cush was sweet & gentle but the shelter told us he had been there for awhile because he slept through all his interviews. We took him home and he has come out of his shell and Mark is the proudest cat owner ever. Adopting Cush into our little family was the best decision we have ever made!

    Our Sweet "Dog" Cat, Frank

    Our Sweet "Dog" Cat, Frank

We found this little kitten in our garage one December night, about 13 years ago. Someone had put a child's costume bracelet around his neck; he had grown so much that the bracelet was cutting into his neck and causing him to have problems swallowing and breathing. We took off the bracelet immediately and took him into our hearts and our home. My daughters named him Frank. He is a perfect cat! He loves to sit on your chest and purr. When we work outside in the yard Frank follows us around like a dog - thus his title, The Dog Cat. We have gotten another cat and two poodles since Frank's arrival and he loves them all. Frank is the sweetest boy!

    My best friend

    My best friend

Ittybit like many cats was found cold and wet in a hedge row crying. A Vets. estimation of only four weeks old she was just an Ittybit. I was going through some hard times at the time when I took her in. She was with me then and in much better time now for fifteen years. Away on business I always looked forward to seeing her when I returned. I just love that cat so much. She's now quite old and frail. The Vet found some benign growths deep in her and she can't process food very well. I'm loosing her. I will soon take her in for her rest she deserves and away from her discomforts. I will miss her so much but I also know that we gave each other so much comfort for so many years. She has lived a beautiful comfortable life. We have one other cat (Smokey) he's young and also living a great life. We will be excepting a new lost or unwanted friend in time so we may give a loving home to another cat.

    16th Birthday Present To Remember

This is Remi and my family and I adopted him from Petco for my 16th birthday. He is one of four kittens that were in foster care and we adopted him through Field Haven Rescue. He is white with orange ears and and orange and white striped tail and he has pretty blue eyes.

He loves cream cheese and enjoys sleeping in purses.

    Remi is quite photogenic!

My new kiity was the best birthday present I could ever have asked for.

    Kikue (sounds like key-koo)

    Kikue (sounds like key-koo)

Kikue was only 6 weeks old, without mother or litter mates when I spotted her among 75-100 older feral cats living down by the river. But being disabled, I could never move fast enough to grab her. All I could think about for a couple of days, I even envisioned someone with a net helping me catch her.

The next day when I drove down to check on her, there were two volunteers from, The Cat House, in Parlier, CA., trying to catch cats, with nets! But, so far, only able to catch one... I just knew which 'one' it was!

I asked if I could have her-- which of course, was music to their ears. And when I produced my own carrying cage and told them of my "vision", they were flabbergasted-- as was I.

Three months old on the photo above, she is now 11 months; clean, wormed, neutered, healthy, big and beautiful. A real home body, she loves being outside during the day, stalking, catching and torturing poor lizards to death (hum). But, at night she's all snuggles and often here, fascinated by my computer screen and a little too interesting in the keyboard! :)

My husband saw Little John's picture on Petfinder.Com and knew immediately that was the cat he wanted. He weighed 17 pounds but we still called him Little John as our other cat is Robin Hood. Belladonna & Bagheera

    Belladonna & Bagheera

Belladonna was one of several Siamese dropped off at a shelter-possibly by a breeder getting rid of cats that were not "Show Quality" {sigh}. My mother loves Siamese, & when we saw Bella on Petfinder, she knew that was the cat for her!

Bagheera was born in a shelter, & had never had a home-until I saw him on Petfinder, & thought he would be a good companion for Belladonna & me-they sleep together, & chase each other around the house. It took a while for Bagheera to get used to having a home, and a "Person"-but Bella has taught him well {she is a bossy little thing!}. If I take a nap, they will both come & keep me company, and are both very vocal-especially if dinner is late!

Cheers for Petfinder-the best place for finding friends & Forever Homes!!!

    My special girl, Mysty

    My special girl, Mysty

We adopted our first cat shortly after we were married and I knew after having Gypsy for a few months that she really needed a playmate. So about 6-7 months later we went to the shelter to find our new addition. Mysty was the rambunctious one, climbing my shirt, crawling on my shoulder, she couldn't be still. The one my husband was holding fell asleep in his hands. Mysty was just too cute for me to pass on, so she's the one we brought home. Ever since, she has been a constant companion and my buddy. Whether you are young or old, she never meets a stranger. Mysty will do her best to get your attention. She is also quite a character, she loves to talk, she also tends to rule the house, so she is the "queen" especially when it comes to ruling over my 2 Maine Coon mixes. At 13 years of age, she is still very active and healthy. I love all my "furry" kids and hope they are around for many more years to come.

I just wish all the strays, homeless animals in the country were as fortunate to find a home. Please, if you are wanting a pet, visit your local animal shelter first. There are so many loving, wonderful pets just waiting for a home, especially older animals, and their time is running out.

    Two for One

    Two for One

When two of his beloved cats died and left an ancient third alone, my adult son thought Figaro might be lonesome. He went to Petsmart where local shelters have regular adoption offerings . He saw a small, scared-looking and very homely cat in the back corner. However, he decided to wait to adopt.

TWO WEEKS later, he went back and when he bent down by the cages, a fluffy long-hair rushed up, purred, flounced around, and played with his hand--he decided to take her. Then he saw after this length of time, the homely one was STILL there. He knew after that length of time, she would never be adopted, so naturally, he took them both! The strange little dumpster kitty became Sweet Pea, and little fluffy is Susan. The tomboy and the cheerleader have brightened his life ever since. Reminds us all that just because they are not pretty, or a kitten, they can make us happy.

    Mitch

    Mitch

This is Mitch, he has been part of our family since 1998. We had a Rottweiler ( female named Julie) and we notice she was playing or trying to hide something. When we took a closer look she had a small kitten sucking on her nipples. The kitten must have been days old ( did not even have the eyes open). Since there was a hurricane coming, we guessed that the mother cat was moving her litter and must have dropped this one. Since then Mitch ( because the hurricane that came was named Mitch) became our cat. As he grew our Rottweiler named Julie would be protecting him constantly. He would hang from her nozzle and would sleep between her paws. Julie has passed away already but Mitch is still with us. We were very fortunate to have found Mitch. Mari Ortiz, Miami, FL

    Hank

I fostered kittens from the local shelter, and when I got Hank and his two siblings I fell in love with all three of them. I decided to adopt all three and keep them together. Hank is such a dear, he loves to give nose rubs and he's such a gentle soul. Fostering is a great way to give back and to get to know an animal before making the committment to keep it. Hank and his siblings are definitely keepers.

I used to think I didn't like cats. A few years ago, a co-worker asked me if I wanted a kitten. I was in a foul mood that morning and imagined someone trying to get rid of their cat's babies and emphatically said "no".

A few hours later, I was outside enjoying a cigarette and I saw a little kitten crouching underneath a car in the parking lot. This was in Arizona in August and the temperature was probably 115. I brought her some water, then took her inside and gave her a slice of ham. She gobbled it up like she had never seen food before.

When work was done, I didn't know quite what to do with her, so I took her to a vet on the way home. The vet diagnosed an upper respiratory infection, said she was starving and noticed that she had been shot by a pellet gun, with the pellet still stuck in her shoulder. She was not dehydrated which I attribute to the sprinkler system a couple of doors down (people in Phoenix love their lawns no matter how much others upstream try to conserve water).

Not knowing what else to do with her, I took her home and she's been with me ever since. The truth is I just really didn't want to see a dead kitten in the parking lot at work, but I'm very glad I did.

And she is a very patriotic kitty and would like to wish you all a happy 4th of July.

Kitty wishes you a happy Indepence Day

She also likes to sit around and watch TV - here she is channel-surfing:

Actually, there was a point to my last post other than "look at my cat, isn't she cute?".

The point is that there are a lot of homeless cats (and dogs too) wandering the streets that could use a good home. They don't have to be purebreds or be raised by a pet store to be a loving animal worthy of your home.

In my experience, when you adopt an animal from a shelter, they know that you have rescued them, and are grateful. I have never been tempted to buy a pet from a breeder or a store. I am perfectly happy with a "good, used" one.

Kitty's name is Kitty - when she was still a recent addition to my family, I told someone that and she said I couldn't call her that when she grew up, but she was wrong.

"Kitty" is only one of 2 words I'm sure she undertands

The other is "goddammit!" She knows I'm serious when I use that word. It often reminds her that my speakers are not scratching posts...also that the houseplants need to be left alone - they are living creatures too

I say "be a good boy" and he meows and goes and lays down.
Meow to him in kitty language is "goddamnit" I'm sure!!
The worst things he does is pulls the garbage bag out each night to see if anythings good is in there to eat, and stealing his big sisters food.
I'm not sure if he's a kitty or a piggy in disguise???
