Russia's Foreign Ministry denounced the tightening of U.S. unilateral sanctions against Iran as unacceptable and contradictory to international law, Interfax news agency reported Tuesday.
Such a practice seriously complicates the constructive dialogue with Tehran, spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said.
The new sanctions, in line with the interests of some countries, would not promote negotiations with Iran, she said.
According to the ministry, the sanctions would affect companies from a third country cooperating with Iran in the oil and refining industry and banking sector.
Tougher sanctions against Tehran were no longer in accordance with the nuclear nonproliferation objectives, it said.
The new U.S. moves came in response to a report released by the International Atomic Energy Agency, which outlined alleged activities pointing to clandestine nuclear bombs making by Iran.
Tehran has denied Western countries' charges that it is seeking nuclear arms, stressing instead the peaceful purpose of its nuclear program.

The U.S. Republican presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich leads the GOP field in a new national poll, four points ahead of the long-time front-runner Mitt Romney.

The prime minister of Libya's interim government announced the lineup of the country's transitional cabinet in the capital Tripoli late Tuesday that will lead the war-torn country until parliamentary elections are held in 2012.

The head of Egypt's ruling military council, Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, said here late Tuesday that the council has accepted the resignation of the caretaker government led by Prime Minister Essam Sharaf.
In a televised address to the nation, Tantawi announced that the presidential elections will take place by July 2012 and the military regime will hand over power back to a civilian government before July 1 that year.
The military does not expect to keep power, Tantawi said, adding that the military is ready to hand over power immediately if people wish so through a referendum.

As Egyptians await a way out of the current crisis, massive protests are continuing at central Cairo's Tahrir Square for the fifth day. Footage of local TV channels showed that a funeral for one of the protesters killed in recent violence was held at the square Tuesday morning.

Egypt's ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces called for urgent talks with political forces late Monday, state TV reported.
The military council said in a statement that it deeply regretted over the latest clashes between protesters and police, and ordered to set up a committee to investigate the violence.
The council offered deep condolences to the families of the victims in the clashes, hoping all the injured would recover soon.

Former Libyan intelligence chief Abdullah al-Senussi has been captured, an official of the ruling National Transitional Council (NTC) said Sunday.
Senussi was captured in Brak al-Shate by a fighter brigade named Ahrar al-Fazan which was led by Ahmed Hesnawe, the NTC spokesman Abdul Hafid Ghoga told reporters here Sunday.
The NTC fighters who were tracking al-Senussi for two days arrested him at his sister's house, about 70 kilometers south of the desert city of Sabha.

Senussi, who had been at large since the fall of Tripoli to NTC forces in August, was seized earlier in the day in the southern Libyan town of Gaara by Sabha militia who are looking for a safe place to keep him in custody.
Senussi, 62, is the brother-in-law and former right-hand man of Libya's former strongman Muammar Gaddafi.
The former Libyan intelligence chief, along with Gaddafi and his second son Saif al-Islam, is wanted by the International Criminal Court on charges of crimes against humanity. The court issued arrest warrants for them in late June.
